5 Signs Your Body Is Still in Winter Mode and How Sound and Breathwork Can Support You.
| | MAR 16

Something shifted this week. The light is lingering a little longer in the evenings and there are tiny signs of life in the garden and the parks that simply weren’t there last week. And this Thursday 20th March we reach the spring equinox. Equal day and equal night. The official turning point into spring.
And yet so many of us don’t feel like spring yet.
If you’ve been feeling unusually tired, flat, or a bit 'can't be bothered', you’re not imagining it, and there’s nothing wrong with you. Our bodies don’t move through the seasons according to the calendar. They move more slowly than that.
After the long months of the cold, darker, wet days and a naturally quieter rhythm, the nervous system doesn’t just switch into spring mode overnight, and this is something I've noticed in my sound bath classes.
Early spring has a very particular energy to it, people tend to arrive tired, in a deep quiet way. Not the wired exhaustion of burnout, but something slower.
So if you are feeling, flat, heavy and tired even though Spring is here, here are 5 signs your nervous system may still be in winter mode and how sound and a little breath work can help your body gently make the transition into the new season.
You may have noticed that you are tired even though you seem to be sleeping ok. Winter asks our bodies to conserve our energy. It’s a biological rhythm. So if you’re waking up and feeling like you haven’t quite arrived into the day yet, your nervous system might still be operating in a slower gear.
One of the most powerful things you can do at this time of year, and it is incredibly simple, is getting some morning light.
Just stepping outside, or opening your window within an hour of waking, even for just ten minutes can really help to start to reset your circadian rhythm and very gently signals to the body that the season is changing.
I notice people settling a little more quickly once the bowls begin, at this time of year, as the tones create a steady, spacious environment that the nervous system can relax into. When we’re tired in this deep way, stimulation isn’t what helps gentle support is.
When your nervous system is still running on its winter reserves, your capacity for stress can be lower, I have definitely noticed this for myself.
Decisions taking longer. A busy diary suddenly feeling more overwhelming, even replying to emails can seem harder. What this often is, is just your body saying 'i'm still restoring'.
One of the simplest things that can really help here is our breath. Just few moments of slow breathing with longer exhales activates the vagus nerve and signals safety to the nervous system. It’s one of the reasons I always begin my sound bath sessions with breath work before the bowls even start, we always take a few gentle breaths, extending the exhalation. Once breathing slows, the sound can do its work much more easily, and support your nervous system more.
Still wanting warm, dense, comforting meals? Winter encourages warmth, for us to rest and for nourishment and if your body is still following that rhythm in March, it just means the transition to spring is happening gradually.
No big reset needed here, your body will respond better to small shifts instead of big changes. For example a little more fresh air, slightly lighter meals when they feel right, and a little more movement every day as the light returns. Your body is amazing and tends to find's i'ts way naturally when given gentle support.
This one is soooo common. I hear people saying things like 'I have loads of thoughts going round in my head, but I can't seem to concentrate on anything properly' and 'where has my focus gone'. In early spring the nervous system can sit in a bit of a middle ground, no longer fully resting like winter, but not yet energised enough for strong focus. It's a bit like a computer waking from sleep mode.
Sound can be incredibly helpful here. The lovely frequencies of crystal bowls give the mind something gentle to follow. Not something to have to think about just something steady and rhythmic. Over time the brainwaves naturally begin to slow, and the mental chatter softens.
It’s not about forcing the mind quiet. It’s about giving it somewhere safe to land. So just 10 minutes, with your headphones on, listening to a YouTube sound bath, can really be supportive, and you may find yourself feeling more focused after wards.
Spring energy in the body is starting to activate. Something in us wants to move more and get going with things. But if the system hasn’t fully rested from winter, it can feel uncomfortable rather than exciting. It's like you are not fully tired any more but you’re not fully ready to push forward either. You’re kinda still in between seasons.
What is sometimes the most helpful is to simply recognise that state and give yourself a little space. Maybe some time in your week you can take a walk without an actual place to be, a slow weekend wake up without rushing, or just 20 minutes when all you need to do is lie down, gently breathe and listen to the sounds around you. This is what is so lovely about a sound bath, it's a space where doing nothing isn't just allowed, it's the entire point.
You don’t need to completely change your routine at this time of year, start waking up at 5am, or suddenly become a different version of yourself because the calendar says it’s a new season.
Your body is doing exactly what bodies do, moving gently and intelligently through the year.
Sometimes what it needs most during this transition is something we rarely give ourselves, intentional rest, to help support ourselves through the transition.
Not the kind of rest that happens when you collapse at the end of the day, but the kind where your nervous system is genuinely supported.
That’s the space I try to create in my sound bath sessions, through breath, through sound, and through the quiet that allows the body to reset itself.
If you're noticing any of these signs in your own body right now, take it as a gentle invitation to slow down a little this week. And if you feel you want to try a sound bath to support you through this time of year link to booking below:
